Operation Market Garden – On September 17, 1944 General Kussin commander of German forces in the area of Arnhem had learned about the airborne landings to the west of Arnhem an area he was responsible. Kussin along with his driver Willeke, an aide Koster and Haupt drove in a staff car to meet with Josef Krafft who was in command of the SS-Panzer Grenadiers and a Reserve Battalion in Wolfheze. After getting a briefing on the situation Kussin and his staff were to return to Arnhem. At the corner of Wolfhezerwag and Utrechtseweg British paratroopers from the No. 5 Platoon, B Company 3rd Parachute Battalion spotted the car and engaged. The area was filmed by the British Army Film and Photography Unit as British troops passed by the area of the engagement. Modern view of the intersection as it looks today.
