During Operation Market Garden September 17, 1944, one of the objective of the 101st Airborne Division was to capture the bridge over the Wilhelmina canal. As the men of the 506 PIR approached the bridge it was blown by German forces. Using wood found in the area they created a foot bridge to secure the area over the canal and move towards Eindhoven. A Bailey Bridge was constructed and on the 19th the bridge was completed and XXX Corp continued their advance. The Memorial at the Son Bridge is to 2LT James Diel the Platoon Commander of 1st Platoon, A Company, 1st Battalion, 506PIR of the 101st Airborne Division who was KIA on September 19, 1944 here at the bridge.
