The mechanism for a Paternò-Büchi reaction which is the photo-catalyzed electrocyclization of a carbonyl with an alkene to form polysubstituted oxetane ring system. The mechanism of the Paternò-Büchi reaction is not well known. A general pathway has been proposed and widely accepted. Büchi originally proposed that the reaction occurred by light catalyzed stimulation of the carbonyl moiety into an excited singlet state.
