The mechanism for the addition of a 2-Tetrahydropyranyl (THP) group which is a common protecting group for alcohols in organic synthesis. Alcohols react with 3,4-dihydropyran to give 2-tetrahydropyranyl ethers. These ethers are stable in a variety of reactions conditions, however, the alcohol can be restored by acid-catalyzed hydrolysis.
