The mechanism for the peptide coupling of a carboxylic acid with an amine to yield an amide. EDC is used as the coupling agent in this reaction. Triethyl amine is used as a base in order to deprotonate the carboxylic acid while hydrochloric is added later in the reaction process in order to protonate a portion of the EDC that will later detach as a urea biproduct.
