The mechanism for a Beirut reaction which involves the condensation of benzofurazan oxide (BFO) with an enamine or enolate anion in an alcohol solvent to yield the corresponding quinoxaline-1,4-dioxide. The first step of the mechanism involves the nucleophilic addition of an enamine to the electrophile BFO to form the first intermediate. Ring closure then occurs via the condensation of the imino-oxide onto the iminium functionality. Finally, elimination of the dialkyl amine yields the final product.
