One screen to the east and you see a room that very clearly looks like arena. Take a few steps and the boss theme starting up should be all you need to confirm it.
This boss fights consists of four very large snakes. Larger than the red ones even. They kick the fight off by showing up in very specific spots in a specific order, meaning you could potentially get off a shot or two on one if your ATB gauge starts high.
After that initial introduction, the snakes will burrow into the ground and pop back up, but only at those four specific spots. When they do decide to attack, their main choice of move is to spit out a spiked ball that splits into needles when it hits the ground. How they split can be wildly random, making them tricky to dodge consistently...and they HURT. We're talking at least 60+ damage a hit.
The snakes can also perform a melee attack that's extremely difficult to dodge, but you're not likely to see this unless you're standing right next to one of the spawn points.
Strategy is simple enough...take shots whenever you can at whatever snake you're near and don't hesitate to fire only one of your two or even three shots if you want to play it safe.
Once a snake gets killed, the others all get bigger the next time they appear. They do get a bit more aggressive with spitting out their spiked balls and they can hit a bit harder.
At two snakes killed, the remaining ones get bigger still and hit a bit harder even. At this point though, the two snakes always appear in the two spots up the center of the arena, meaning you can dodge in a specific way to make the spiked balls split in a very predictable way. If the southern snake attacks, you can run south/southwest, then just before the spiked ball hits the ground, run west and you should just barely beat out one needle that sails behind Aya.
If the central snake attacks, you've likely just finished dodging the southern snake's attack and can move north/northwest, then east towards the central snake. The needles will spread out in almost every direction except Aya's and give you a good chance to shoot the central snake.
After the third snake dies, things get nasty. The last one gets massive in size and trades out that melee attack for one where it slams the ground and sweeps it in a very wide arc. It's possible to dodge if you're at the right range to trigger the attack and run back the moment it comes up from the ground. This means you're not going to be able to hit it though.
Luckily, me having Barrier for this fight gives me a way to attack and not take a giant chunk of hp damage in return. Being able to bait out the sweep attack also helps since you can let your pe meter recharge enough to recast Barrier. Just be ready to swap armors to let your pe meter recharge rate return to normal.
Eventually, the final snake falls, you get a big chunk of xp, and get a bunch of drops. Could be Ammo +15s, but more commonly will be Defense +1s. Run back to save afterwards.
Day 2 concludes next time!
