For more than 20 years, photographer Marc Dozier has returned to the remote islands of Papua New Guinea, earning a level of trust rarely granted to outsiders. This time, he receives an extraordinary invitation: to witness and photograph a sacred initiation ceremony normally hidden from non-initiates.
On the tiny island of Kapo, preparations are underway for a ritual that will transform three boys into men. Sacred masks are built in secret, shell money is exchanged, feathers gathered, and elders prepare ceremonies whose meanings have been passed down for generations. Some traditions remain so sensitive that even Marc, despite being welcomed as family, is warned that certain images can never be shown to the uninitiated.
Beyond the spectacle of masks and dances, this is a rare immersion into the intimate world of a Papuan community. Through friendship, trust and years of shared experiences, the documentary offers access to a side of Papua New Guinea that few outsiders ever see: a living culture where ancient rituals continue to shape identity, belonging and the passage into adulthood.
