In the labyrinth of lagoons and canals of Kerala, life follows the rhythm of water. At dawn, Ginoy heads out to fish with his son and cousins, continuing a tradition passed down through generations.
In these freshwater backwaters, fishermen know every channel, every patch of vegetation where fish hide. Using an ancestral technique called odakku vala, they surround entire sections of aquatic plants with nets before catching the fish by hand, one by one.
Once the catch is sorted, the day continues at the bustling market of Changanassery, where fishermen from across the region gather to sell their fish. Prices are set collectively, ensuring that every family earns a fair share.
But life in the backwaters is not only about work. On the riverbanks, thousands gather for the legendary snake boat races, a centuries-old tradition where long wooden boats glide across the water to the rhythm of songs and drums.
Between fishing, markets and celebration, this journey offers a rare glimpse into the everyday life of the communities who call Kerala’s backwaters home.
