In the remote Bijagós Archipelago of Guinea-Bissau, life is still deeply tied to the sea. Among the mangrove islands and shallow Atlantic waters, fishing remains one of the few ways for families to survive.
We follow Beto, one of the rare fishermen in his village who owns a motorized pirogue. With his son Manuel, he ventures far from the coast to search for barracuda, threadfins and other prized fish that can be sold in Bissau, the capital.
But the ocean is changing. Sharks that were once common have become rare, and increasing demand for shark fins has begun to affect local ecosystems. Between traditional fishing knowledge and modern pressures, the balance of life at sea is becoming fragile.
During a night spent on a deserted island, father and son reflect on the future. Will Manuel continue the difficult life of a fisherman, or will the next generation leave the sea behind?
