Here is a combination of "Jolly Old St. Nicholas," and Pachelbel's "Canon in D!" While writing out different harmonies for Jolly Old St. Nicholas, I noticed that its chord progression sounded very familiar. Sure enough, it uses the same chord progress invented by Mr. Pachelbel! I thought it would be neat to put the two songs together.
I actually arranged this for a work holiday party. I asked around the office if there were people who played instruments, and if they would like to participate in a fun little ensemble. There actually were quite a few musical people, and we played a few songs at the annual "winter holiday party." It was really fun! There was another medley of songs that we played -- I might make a video for that arrangement next year.
Benjamin Hanby wrote the lyrics to "Jolly Old St. Nicholas." Hanby also wrote one of my favorite tunes "Up on the Housetop." However, James Pierpont wrote the tune that often accompanies "Jolly Old St. Nicholas." Pierpont also wrote "Jingle Bells / Dashing Through the Snow," one of the most well known tunes around the world.
I can't believe it's already the end of 2015. The other mind-boggling thought is that I've been posting videos for over a year now! My goal at the beginning of the year was to post something each week, but that posed to be far far far too difficult whilst having a full-time job. Instead of 52 videos, I was able to make 41 -- which is still quite a lot! Although some seem to turn out better than others for reasons beyond my comprehension, they all have been SO MUCH FUN to make! : D
I've learned a lot about video, video editing, and recording the violin -- with lots more to still learn, and I've learned little bits and pieces about music production. I think the next step is to focus a lot more on the complexities of music production and try to post some of my original tunes. I'm a bit nervous about all of that, but I think it will be a lot of fun! I never realized how complicated this can get until I tried to do it myself. I now understand why people can make entire careers out of each little segment.
This video was another green screen attempt. I've been watching a lot of tutorials about green screens and learned that there are ways to manually key out the green rather than rely on the automatic settings from the program. I think I've been able to do a little better job since the violin bows are a little more visible, but I still need to practice working with greens screens more. I think part of the problem is a lack of space to properly use a green screen, which creates difficult footage to key.
Because of the darkness, the background used to replace the green would have had a lot of "noise." I took a picture when there were very few people, and then also filmed a few minutes from the same camera angle. I masked together some of the moving objects, such as the fire reflection in the window and a few people walking around in the background with the still image. I think this made a pretty cool background! Making the green screen subjects blend into the background is always a tricky task.. Hopefully I've made it convincing! =)
It might not look like much, but I edited this video for 2 weeks! Due to low memory, my computer couldn't process all of the green screen layers of video very well, so I had to export the video after each edit to see if the edits were adequate. Each export took ~6 hours....Good golly, it was a tough video to make!
