The Oregon Trail might be educational, but not in the way most people think.
If you grew up in the 80s-90s, there’s a good chance that you played The Oregon Trail in school. The game sold over 65 million copied, and was praised for its educational value. The goal was to teach students about the harsh realities of the old west through an engaging and entertaining video game, but it turns out the information might not have sunk in as well as we thought. More recent studies have found that games like The Oregon Trail are not great at teaching kids historical facts, but they may have been learning equally important skills instead.
Virtual Reality has been lingering in the gaming communities collective mind for decades, but due to limitations in technology, has never been able to reach a mainstream audience. Now, VR is making another run for the limelight, led by the likes of the Oculus Rift, Google Glass, and the proposed Playstation VR. The technology has advanced enough to create stunning virtual worlds, but will it finally be enough to catch on? ‘Braid’ shot straight to the top of the Xbox Live marketplace, and helped to fuel the indie video game trend that continues to grow today. It was created by Jonathan Blow over multiple years, and has been met with fantastic reviews from critics. With his follow-up game ‘The Witness’ on a similar path to success, we began to wonder if Blow may be a modern gaming genius. Minecraft is one of the most popular games of all time. And yet, the graphics are a bit… blocky. It seem like a strange choice for such a popular game to make when graphics have become so amazing in recent years. However, it turns out that there is an interesting reason as to why Minecraft has such a distinct style, and it all comes down to the voxel. In the world of 3-D modeling, the voxel was decisively defeated by the polygon. But thanks to one committed programmer, the voxel lived on, and eventually made it’s way into the biggest game in recent history!

Super Mario’s various powerups do much more than simply make Mario stronger. In fact, they all have very specific advantages and disadvantages, even when you’re tiny! Your level of powerup will affect almost every aspect of how you approach the game, and we think that this is why Super Mario Bros. has stood the test of time as one of the all-time great examples of video game design. Our Super Mario trilogy continues with how Shigeru Miyamoto used manga to design Super Mario and how that design trains you to be a better player.
Super Mario, like any good video game should, takes you by the hand and shows you the skills necessary to become a talented player. You are not simply thrown into an impossibly difficult situation, but rather, you are built up over the course of basic levels that serve as a form of tutorial. Each new challenge builds upon skills that you have been previously tested on, leading you step-by-step to mastery. The fact that Super Mario games can execute this so flawlessly may have ties to the Japanese art of yonkoma, and more specifically, kishōtenketsu. We explain how, and examine how it relates to the Super Mario Maker, in this week’s episode of Game/Show!

Pain has long been a fundamental element of video games. It is used to inform the player how to act, and punish them for choosing incorrectly. When underutilized, a game becomes boring and overly simple. And yet, taken to the extreme, it can begin to feel unnecessary and… somewhat disturbing. Our second installment of Game Design 101 is all about presenting your players with a series of interesting decisions. You may not even realize it, but even the most visibly simplistic games present serious choices that serve to captivate the gamer. Choice give the player more control over the outcome of their gaming experience. They can feel more deserving of a flawless victory, but must also accept responsibility for crushing defeat. This week, we begin our dive into the elements of a great game by examining goals. Without an end-goal, a game can lose it’s focus. Whether the goals are explicitly set by the game designers or the player themselves, it is important for there to be a strong objective in order to motivate the player. You may not consciously notice that bird chirping down the block, or the rumble of a train in the distance. But if you were to remove ambient noises like these, something would immediately seem wrong. The same principle applies to gaming. If you want to immerse a player in your game’s world, you’re going to need to make it sound like real-life. A video game's world needs to sound like it is existing beyond your immediate perception of it, or else risk seeming static and boring. In this week’s Game/Show, Jamin explores this idea through one of the greatest modern examples of interactive sound design, GTA V.

The threat of death keeps video games exciting and exhilarating, and can really affect how you play. Knowing the condition of your character is important for deciding strategy and urgency, but there is much debate over the best way to display this information. Some games rely on simple numbers and statistics to indicate health, while others choose to represent those numbers with visual cues. As language has changed over the years, Scrabbles's famous point system has become flawed. In this week's episode, Jamin analyzes the genius of Frogger's gameplay, and how it has continued to influence popular games today. The 1981 classic became so well-known for it's static overhead camera that no game using the same viewpoint since can escape comparison. Five Nights at Freddy's has acquired massive popularity as one of the leading survival horror games of this year.
