October 20, 2005 - Less than 10 games into his NHL career, Alex Ovechkin was already making history. He had recorded a point in each of his first seven games, tied with Sergei Makarov and Alexandre Daigle for the 5th longest streak from the start of a player's career. On his first shift of the game, the Great 8 would score his 5th goal of the season to extend the streak to eight games. Ovechkin's strong performance continued throughout the night, adding a highlight-reel goal to cut the Panthers' lead to one late in the game and finished the game with a then career-high 10 shots. The same could not be said about the rest of the Capitals, however, as they allowed a franchise-record 28 shots on goal in the second period en route to a 3-2 loss. Still, Ovechkin's big night gave Caps fans something to be excited about. The two players he tied, Newsy Lalonde and Eddie Gerard, did so in the NHL's inaugural 1917-18 season. At the time the only players to play in the modern NHL to record a longer streak were Wayne Babych (10 games in 1978-79), Joe Sakic (12 games in 1988-89), and Dimitri Kvartalnov (14 games in 1992-93). Since then only Johnathan Toews (10 games in 2007-08) has matched or eclipsed Ovechkin's mark, further evidence of just how rare an achievement it was. As of the posting of this video, it is still the longest point streak to start a career by a #1 overall draft pick.
