December 31, 2022 - The hat trick is perhaps the most famous single-game goal-scoring accomplishment in hockey. Scoring goals is arguably the hardest thing to do in hockey, so to do it three times in the same game unsurprisingly garners attention. Heading into a New Year's Eve matchup against the Montreal Canadiens, a team Ovi had feasted on like few others, the Great 8 needed just one more three-goal outburst to join an elite group of just five players (Gretzky, Lemieux, Bossy, Brett Hull, Esposito) who registered at least three goals in a game 30 or more times in their career. Ovechkin, as well as the rest of the Caps, made easy work of the Habs, with Ovechkin's third of the night being the exclamation point of a dominating 9-2 win as he continued the chase of Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record.
