April 20, 2022 - By age 36, most NHL players have retired, and if they are still playing, they are not putting up big numbers like they once did. But Alex Ovechkin is not most players. Despite being closer to 40 than 30 in age, the Great 8 was having one of his best seasons in years. In 74 games, Ovi had put up a remarkable 48 goals and 87 points, on pace for the most points he'd had in a season since his 109-point campaign in 2009-10 as a 24-year-old. Visiting Las Vegas late in the season, the Capitals' captain was unsurprisingly on the verge of history once again. His next two goals would be huge - his 49th goal would break a tie with Teemu Selanne for the most by a player 36 or older, and this 50th goal would secure his 9th 50-goal season and tie him with Wayne Gretzky and Mike Bossy for the most 50-goal seasons all-time. Ovechkin delivered with one of his best games of the season, scoring both milestone goals and adding an assist (with a second taken off due to an offside review). The Capitals needed every bit of Ovechkin's performance this night too. Ovechkin's 3 points came on Washington's only three goals on the night as Vegas, a team fighting to stay alive in the playoff race, was able to hold off the Caps and ultimately win in overtime thanks to a highlight-reel goal by Shea Theodore. Despite the loss, however, Ovechkin's performance on this night stands out as not only a historic moment, but one of the best of his 2021-22 season.
