March 5, 2008 - Coming off a 3-goal 2-assist performance in his previous game, Alex Ovechkin had a chance to make more history in his next outing. He sat at 52 goals heading into the contest, the same number he had reached in his unforgettable rookie season and the most he had ever scored in a season. With 15 games left, however, it was a matter of when not if the Great 8 would set a new career high. Ovechkin wasted little time, scoring his 53rd goal in the first period to open the scoring. He would add his 54th goal late in the third period to all but seal the important win for the Caps. When the final horn sounded Ovechkin had not only set a new career high but trailed only Dennis Maruk's 60 goals in 1981-82 for the most ever scored by a Capital in a season. Ovechkin would go on to not only surpass Maruk but also break Luc Robitaille's single-season record for all left wings as he finished with 65 goals in one of the greatest goal-scoring seasons in NHL history.
