November 15, 2008 - After a slow start to the season with just 2 goals in his first 11 games, Alex Ovechkin was beginning to pick up the pace. With goals in three straight games, Ovi was starting to look more like the player who scored 65 goals and won the MVP a year prior. Against the Devils, the Great 8 made it clear that the slump was over, and he did so in dramatic fashion. Trailing 5-4 in the dying seconds of regulation, Nicklas Backstrom, who had a fantastic game in his own right*, found Ovechkin backdoor for the tying goal with just 1.1 seconds left on the clock. The Capitals ended up losing in the shootout, but their superstar's performance was a decent consolation prize. Ovi finished the night with 3 points and 12 shots - nearly double his previous high for the season. Ovechkin even saw several shorthanded shifts, and it was actually this season that saw Ovechkin set a career high in shorthanded ice time. He followed up this game with another great performance, a 4-point game in Anaheim (youtu.be/qGBuZ7nEA4k), and never slowed down the rest of the season, putting up 49 goals and 92 points in the final 64 games on his way to back-to-back Hart and Rocket Richard Trophies.
