His first game hadn't been bad, but this was the Stanley Cup Final, and anything short of his best could be the difference between winning and losing. The Great 8 delivered several huge hits on the Golden Knights - not even sparing former teammate Nate Schmidt. With the score tied in the second period, Ovechkin scored his first career Cup Final goal to give the Caps the lead. Even with Ovechkin's great game, other players had to step up for the Caps, as stay-at-home defenseman Brooks Orpik scored to make it 3-1 shortly after, and Braden Holtby recorded arguably the greatest save in Stanley Cup Final history to preserve a 3-2 lead late. The Capitals would ride the momentum, winning each of the next three games to clinch the first Stanley Cup in franchise history.
