January 31, 2010 - As the first month of 2010 came to an end, the Washington Capitals were looking to tie a franchise record. With nine straight wins, the Capitals could equal the franchise high mark of 10 consecutive victories set in 1984. It wasn't just the last nine games that were great for Washington - they were 12-1 in their last 13, a stretch of games that coincided with Ovechkin being named captain. Their one loss in that stretch - a 7-4 defeat in Tampa on January 12th. With a chance to get revenge and make history, the captain delivered. After a shaky first period that included a miss on a wide open net, Ovechkin recorded his career-high 17th assist of the month on a Nicklas Backstrom powerplay goal to get the scoring started. The Caps controlled much of the game through the first 40 minutes taking a 2-0 lead into the third, but the Bolts tied things up with two quick goals in the 3rd. The Ovechkin line had many great shifts already in the game, and with just over six minutes left, Backstrom found the Great 8 for his 35th of the season to retake the lead. Ovechkin's goal would prove to be the game winner as the Caps secured the record-tying victory. Washington's win streak would reach 14, a franchise record that still stands as of the 2024-25 season.
