December 23, 2022 - After a hat trick against Chicago, Alex Ovechkin became just the third player ever to score 800 goals. There was little time to rest, however, as an arguably greater milestone lay just two goals ahead: 2nd place all-time. Ovechkin went 4 games without a goal in pursuit of the milestone, but in the final game before the NHL's 2022 Christmas Break, Ovechkin broke through with his 801st to tie the man simply known as "Mr. Hockey" - Gordie Howe. After a few chances in the game, the Jets pulled their goalie. After his first attempt at the empty cage hit the post, Ovechkin appeared disinterested in shooting the puck to overtake Howe, but Evgeny Kuznetsov was even less interested and passed it right back to Ovi. Ovechkin ended the drama while facing away from the net to become just the 2nd player ever to score 802 goals, and marked the beginning of the last chapter of The Gr8 Chase as Ovechkin stared down the 92 goals standing between him and the last name on the list - Wayne Gretzky.
