Olsenbanden (The Olsen Gang) is originally a Danish film series of the same name, featuring Danish actors Ove Sprogøe, Morten Grunwald, and Poul Bundgaard in the respective roles of Egon Olsen, Benny Fransen, and Kjell Jensen. The original Norwegian cast of the Olsenbanden film series (1969–1984) was led by Arve Opsahl as Egon Olsen, Carsten Byhring as Kjell Jensen, and Sverre Holm as Benny Fransen.
The series also featured Aud Schønemann as Valborg Jensen and Harald Heide-Steen Jr. as Dynamitt-Harry, who became a mainstay in the Norwegian adaptations unlike in the original Danish films.
Other notable recurring actors in the Norwegian versions included Pål Johannessen as Basse Jensen (appearing in eight films) and Sverre Wilberg as Superintendent Hermansen. The role of Police Inspector Holm was played by four different actors: Øivind Blunck (five films), Oddbjørn Hesjevoll, Ulf Wengård, and Anders Hatlo.
The production company Teamfilm shared office space with the distributor Norena Film—represented by Harry Ottersen, who at the time distributed films from the Danish studio Nordisk Film in Norway. Harry Ottersen showed the first Danish Olsen-banden film to director Knut Bohwim. Bohwim felt that the Danish humor was not suited to Norwegian audiences and conceived the idea of acquiring remake rights from Nordisk Film to produce a Norwegian version based on the Danish script.
The first day of filming for Operasjon Egon was April 28, 1969. The film premiered on August 11 of the same year. The production collaborated with Nordisk Film in Denmark, with the Danish Sten Hasager serving as production manager, among others. That same year, the Danes began filming their sequel, Olsen-Banden på spanden. From then until 1999, a Norwegian version was released the year after the Danish premiere.
Over time, the Norwegian scripts were increasingly adapted to the Norwegian context, distancing themselves from the Danish originals. An equal number of films were produced in Denmark and Norway. In 1981, Sweden launched its Jönssonligan series, which was also based on scripts by Erik Balling and Henning Bahs.
