Octopath Traveler was announced for Nintendo Switch 2 today during the series' 8th anniversary broadcast, and the Japanese version, which still supports English language, released the same day. This video is me playing the Japanese Switch 2 version of the original Octopath Traveler early, ahead of the western release on October 1st 2026.

Octopath Traveler is the acclaimed HD-2D RPG that first debuted on the original Switch in 2018, blending striking retro 2D character sprites with beautiful 3D environments. The Nintendo Switch 2 version brings improved resolution and frame rate over the original release, which makes a real difference to the HD-2D art style, particularly the sharper image when docked. The game sends you across the continent of Orsterra following eight distinct travelers, each with their own story, motivations and unique Path Actions, with the acclaimed Break and Boost battle system returning intact.
Worth noting for anyone considering it, Square Enix has confirmed there is no upgrade path from the original Switch version and no save data transfer, so this is a fresh purchase and a fresh start. The western release arrives October 1st 2026 both digitally and physically, with the physical release being a Game-Key Card.
