From around 1750, the oboe emerged as a virtuoso solo instrument in the concert hall, inspiring a rich repertoire of Classical-era concertos. Alongside Mozartâs celebrated concerto, works by Ferlendis, Dittersdorf, and Hofmann share the same grace, brilliance, and melodic charm of the Viennese Classical style.
Ludwig August Lebrun, trained in the Mannheim tradition, wrote oboe concertos of great melodic invention and instrumental brilliance, while Johann Wilhelm Hertel (1727â1789) combined late Baroque expressiveness with early Classical clarity, his concertos often reflecting the influence of C. P. E. Bachâs Empfindsamer Stilâespecially in the expressive G minor Concerto No. 5.
