Thomas was bringing home some men who had come back to Sodor after fighting the Second World War. At one of the station, a boy was waiting for his father with his mother but as time went on, the mother lost interest but not the boy. He waited and waited but his father hadn't shown up. Thomas was sad and thought of all the children whose fathers weren't going to be back in time for Christmas.
