Before the days of the North Western Railway's formation, Sodor use to have three different railway companies. One of these lines was called the Elsbridge & Knapford Railway and was horse drawn as they take lead from the mines to the harbour. But with the constant dredging being difficult it was decided to extend the line to Tidmouth and that the line was to be steam powered, which would replace the horses.
A new engine named Glynn was built by Topham Hatt and the men who were used to horses didn't like and so decided to have a race to see who is better for the job.
