On our most recent expedition to coastal North Carolina, we had one major goal: to get up close with the incredible red carolina pygmy rattlesnake, the smallest rattlesnake species in the world, and one of the most beautifully colored pit viper in North America, and after 3 days straight of teaching, we finally found them!

Carolina Pygmy Rattlesnakes (Sistrurus miliarius miliarus) are one of three subspecies of the pygmy rattlesnake, and on average is considered to be the smallest, making them the smallest rattlesnake in the world. These incredibly small snakes grow less than a foot in length, and are known to feed mostly on small frogs and lizards. They are commonly found in certain areas along the east coast, and can be grey, lavender, bright red, and even pink! While this species of rattlesnake bite isn't considered to be fatal, always seek medical attention if you are ever bitten by this snake, as their cytotoxic venom can often destroy blood vessels and nerves. While this species in not endangered, they are protected through many parts of their range due to poaching and habitat loss, so if you're ever lucky enough to see a pygmy rattlesnake, make sure to admire it from a safe distance, and do your best not to disturb these feisty little vipers.
