A "FRIENDLY FIRE HIT" is a slang term for a play where a player is accidentally tackled, blocked, or injured by their own teammate. It generally happens during chaotic plays, such as blown blocking assignments, punt returns, or when a teammate inadvertently takes out the ball-carrier while trying to make a block.

A lineman or wide receiver misreads a play and accidentally blocks a teammate who is trying to catch or run with the ball. On kickoffs or punts, multiple players converging to block for the returner sometimes collide, knocking each other over or blocking the returner's path. When a defender is closing in on a ball-carrier, an offensive player trying to make a block may unintentionally clip, tackle, or take out their own teammate in the scramble.
