During the 2012 NFC Wild Card playoff game between Washington and the Seattle Seahawks on January 6, 2013, rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3) suffered a devastating, career-altering right knee injury.
Griffin entered the playoff game already playing through a Grade 1 LCL sprain sustained against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 14 of the regular season. In the first quarter, after leading Washington to a quick 14-0 lead, RG3 rolled out and threw a pass off his back foot, visibly tweaking his right knee. He was seen limping heavily for the remainder of the game. In the fourth quarter, with Washington trailing 21-14, Griffin attempted to field a low shotgun snap. As he leaned down to retrieve the ball, his heavily braced right knee buckled awkwardly in a non-contact motion, causing his leg to completely give way. The injury remains one of the most controversial medical decisions in modern NFL history. Head coach Mike Shanahan and the Washington coaching staff faced intense scrutiny for allowing Griffin to remain in the game while he was visibly incapacitated. Griffin underwent major reconstructive surgery days later and rushed his recovery to return for Week 1 of the 2013 season. However, the injury permanently robbed him of the elite, explosive speed that won him the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
