The "Fail Mary" was an infamous, controversial play on September 24, 2012, where the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Green Bay Packers 14–12 on a game-ending Hail Mary. Because of a referee lockout, replacement officials ruled it a simultaneous catch, incorrectly awarding a touchdown to Seattle despite an apparent interception by Packers defender M.D. Jennings.

Trailing 12–7 with just eight seconds remaining, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson threw a Hail Mary pass from the 46-yard line into the end zone.
As the ball arrived, a scrum of Seattle and Green Bay players leaped for it. Packers safety M.D. Jennings appeared to secure the ball against his chest for an interception, while Seahawks receiver Golden Tate was simultaneously wrapping his arms around it. During the play, Tate also shoved Packers cornerback Sam Shields to the ground which was a blatant offensive pass interference that went uncalled.
As the players tumbled to the turf, the officials were completely split. One referee signaled for a touchdown, while another ran in and signaled an incomplete pass / touchback. After a lengthy huddle without instant replay review, the officials officially ruled it a simultaneous catch. Under NFL rules, ties in simultaneous possession favor the offense, giving the Seahawks a 14–12 victory.
