After receiving a block, Moorman made a split-second decision to cut upfield to secure the first down. He never saw Taylor coming. Taylor sprinted from nearly 30 yards back, lined up the punter, and delivered a clean, thunderous shoulder-to-chest tackle that launched Moorman off his cleats. Despite the violence of the collision, Moorman popped right back up, chased Taylor down, and tapped him on the back to congratulate him, saying, "Hey, nice hit!"
Moorman has stated that the game jersey from that day is his most cherished piece of career memorabilia. While he frames all his other jerseys facing backward to display the nameplate, this specific jersey is framed facing forward. Taylor’s hit was so hard that his face mask embedded into Moorman's shoulder, leaving paint transferred onto the fabric and ripping a hole in the jersey.
The fake punt was called by AFC Pro Bowl coach Bill Belichick. Belichick later noted it was one of the hardest hits he had ever witnessed.
