On Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1993, Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Leon Lett made one of the most famous blunders in NFL history, allowing the Miami Dolphins to secure a miracle 16-14 victory.The game was played during a rare, severe snow and sleet storm at Texas Stadium. With just 15 seconds remaining on the clock, the Cowboys were leading 14-13. The Dolphins attempted a game-winning 41-yard field goal, which was cleanly blocked by Dallas lineman Jimmie Jones.
Because the blocked ball crossed the line of scrimmage, it was legally treated like a missed field goal or an untouched punt. If the Cowboys had simply left the ball alone, it would have been blown dead, and Dallas would have taken possession to run out the clock and win the game. As the ball skidded and came to a rest on the icy turf, Leon Lett chased it down. He slipped as he tried to fall on it, inadvertently kicking and muffing the ball. By touching the ball, Lett made it "live". The Dolphins quickly recovered the muffed ball at the Cowboys' 1-yard line with only 3 seconds left on the clock.
