On January 1, 2006, during the final week of the 2005 NFL regular season, New England Patriots backup quarterback Doug Flutie converted the first successful drop kick in the NFL since 1941.

The Patriots had already secured their playoff spot, and head coach Bill Belichick was resting several key starters. In the fourth quarter, backup quarterback Matt Cassel threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Tim Dwight, bringing the score to 25-13. Instead of sending out the standard field goal unit for the Point After Touchdown (PAT), Belichick sent the 43-year-old Flutie onto the field.

Flutie caught the direct snap from the center, took a couple of steps forward, dropped the football, and kicked it cleanly over the crossbar and through the uprights immediately after it bounced off the turf.

The successful drop kick added one point to the board, cutting Miami's lead to 25-20. The Patriots ultimately lost the game, but the stadium erupted like a party. Flutie ran straight to the sideline to celebrate with a rare hug from Bill Belichick—famously walking right past a waiting Tom Brady and leaving him hanging.
