A beautiful new zebra foal was spotted at the Namib Desert waterhole, staying close to its mother while carefully exploring the surroundings for the very first time.

Young zebra foals are able to stand and walk within a short time after birth an important survival instinct in the wild. During the first days of life, the foal learns to recognize its mother’s unique stripe pattern, voice, and scent while staying safely within the protection of the herd.

Zebras, found across Namibia’s rugged landscapes, are specially adapted to survive in dry and rocky environments. Waterholes like this one become important meeting points where wildlife can drink, socialize, and stay alert for predators.
