Great New Independent Educational Learning Website: Visit Climate.us For Trusted Climate Information
The new climate data information website climate.us replaces the NOAA site climate.gov that was chopped during the mass firings of US Federal workers by DOGE last year.
This new website is extremely useful for accessing and learning about data on our global climate system.
Play around with it, and you will certainly learn a lot about climate.

Ongoing Darkening of Global Oceans - Enormous Disruption to Albedo, Phytoplankton, and Web of Life
Sometimes a peer-reviewed scientific paper comes along that has Earth-Shattering implications. A few months ago, such a paper was published. The concept of Ocean Darkening immediately triggered my radar, especially since my life before climate change was laser optics and the physics of light and electromagnetic radiation.
Basically, vast regions of the global oceans are becoming darker. Thus, albedo is being reduced, and of course this leads to more sunlight absorption and less reflection, warming the Earth in every increasing amounts. Not only that, but there are profound implications to the ocean web of life. Phytoplankton only grow near the ocean surface in the presence of oxygen, nutrients, and sunlight. Sunlight penetration into the open ocean extends downward through the water column up to 200 meters depth, where water properties extinguish the light with greater depths. This upper layer, the photic zone, is where phytoplankton plants grow, and the largest daily migration of life on the planet is the zooplankton animals that hide down below in the day, and migrate upwards at night to the photic zone to munch on the phytoplankton.
Essentially, a darkening ocean means that the depth of the photic zone reduces, so the phytoplankton blooms can only occur much closer to the surface, making it harder for the zooplankton to reach, and the increasing water temperatures and stratification (less vertical mixing) means that less nutrients upwell into the photic zone. Bad news for the entire web of life in the oceans.

Recent Peer=Reviewed Scientific Paper in Global Change Biology
Title: Darkening of the Global Ocean
ABSTRACT
The photic zones of the oceans—where sunlight and moonlight drive ecological interactions—are one of the most productive habitats on the planet and fundamental to the maintenance of healthy global biogeochemical cycles. Ocean darkening occurs when changes in the optical properties of the oceans reduce the depth to which sufficient light penetrates to facilitate biological processes guided by sunlight and moonlight. We analyzed a 9 km resolution annual time series of MODIS Aquas diffuse attenuation coefficient of light at 490 nm [Kd (490)] to quantify whether the oceans have darkened over the last 20 years and the impact of this on the depth of photic zones around the world. Kd (490) increased across 75,341,181 km 2 (21%) of the global ocean between2003 and 2022, resulting in photic zone depths reducing by more than 50 m across 32,449,129 km 2 (9%) by area. The depth of the photic zone has reduced by more than 10% across 32,446,942 km 2 (9%) of the global ocean. Our analysis indicates that ocean darkening is not restricted to coastal regions, but affects large swathes of the open ocean. A combination of nutrient, organic material and sediment loading near the coasts and changes in global ocean circulation are probable causes of increases in primary and secondary productivity that have reduced light penetration into surface waters. The implications of ocean darkening for marine ecology and the ecosystem services provided by the surface oceans are currently unknown but likely to be severe.

New Orlean’s is Sinking. Very very Quickly. Could be BAD…
Hello Everybody,
I chat about a recent peer reviewed scientific paper on how New Orleans and the surrounding region is sinking. Namely land subsidence, wetland erosion, massive hurricanes, and rising sea levels are all combining to have scientists gravely warning that the time to start evacuating the regions is now, not in a decade or several decades, but now.
I also chat about a second paper published around a month ago about how our existing models on sea level rise are severely underestimating the reality, especially in southern hemisphere regions.
Get out now and buy those hip waders while you can...

Climate-driven depopulation and adaptation realities in America’s coastal ground zero
Abstract
With global temperatures poised to exceed the 1.5°C Paris Agreement threshold—a level that triggered substantial ice-sheet collapse during the Last Interglacial—low-elevation coastal zones face sea-level commitments far beyond current planning horizons. With this geological frame of reference, we examine the impact of sea-level rise on what may be the most physically vulnerable coastal zone in the world using prehistoric and contemporary patterns of human mobility. We highlight the positive aspects of the recently commenced out-migration in this region and argue that the fate of communities landwards of this coastal zone will be decided in the next few decades.

Sea level much higher than assumed in most coastal hazard assessments
Link: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-026-10196-1
Abstract
The impacts of sea-level rise and other hazards on the coasts of the world are determined by coastal sea-level height and land elevation1. Correct integration of both aspects is fundamental for reliable sea-level rise and coastal hazard impact assessments2,3, but is often not carefully considered or properly performed. Here we show that more than 99% of the evaluated impact assessments handled sea-level and land elevation data inadequately, thereby misjudging sea level relative to coastal elevation. Based on our literature evaluation, 90% of the hazard assessments assume coastal sea levels based on geoid models, rather than using actual sea-level measurements. Our meta-analyses on global scale show that measured coastal sea level is higher than assumed in most hazard assessments (mean offsets [standard deviation] of 0.27 m [0.76 m] and 0.24 m [0.52 m] for two commonly-used geoids). Regionally, predominantly in the Global South, measured mean sea level can be more than 1 m above global geoids, with the largest differences in the Indo-Pacific. Compared with geoid-based assumptions of coastal sea level, the measured values suggest that with a hypothetical 1 m of relative sea-level rise, 31–37% more land and 48–68% more people (increasing estimates to 77–132 million) would fall below sea level. Our results highlight the need for re-evaluation of existing coastal impact assessments and improvement of research community standards, with possible implications for policymakers, climate finance and coastal adaptation.
