Near-term Short Story: The Long Game by Tom Riley
I read this short story called "The Long Game" by Tom Riley, a retired NASA space instrumentation engineer working on STEM education for kids. STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics

"“You say your AI is helpful. But they don’t need an army of robots, do
they?” the voice sneered. “They just drag their feet on climate solutions
until it’s too late for anyone else to act.”
Sarah straightened. “Excuse me?”
“You know exactly what I mean,” the caller continued. “We were promised
miracles—carbon drawdown, water equity, fusion. But AIs stalled. Not
enough data. Not enough consensus. They talk us to death while the planet
burns.”
"Sarah began, “The global population is in serious overshoot. We are using
more than the Earth can regenerate, and that creates systemic
stress—ecological, economic, emotional.”
“But we’re not heading for a cliff,” Sarah continued. “We’re slowing down. In
most of the world, birthrates are already below replacement. If that trend
holds—and there’s every reason to think it will—we’re on a long descent.”
JanetN added: “If the average number of babies per woman remains below
2.1, population decline is inevitable. That threshold has already been
crossed in Europe, China, North America, parts of South America, and
even parts of Africa.”
"Sarah added, “We’ve seen this before. The northern plains of North
America were under ice as late as 12,000 years ago. Yet, by the late
1800s, they were farmland.”
Frank whistled. “That’s fast in geologic terms.”
“With drainage projects and soil management,” Sarah said, “the North
could become a major food growing zone. But only if we plan it right.”
