An Arizona man from a temple in Tempe is currently missing following catastrophic floods that swept through the Nepal-Tibet border. Sri Keshava Rao Tadpatri was in the area on a pilgrimage when the devastating natural event occurred. The death toll from the floods has climbed to over 900, with thousands of people still unaccounted for, including more than 80 Americans.
Rescue efforts are heavily focused on the hundreds of workers believed to be trapped in underground tunnels at hydropower projects. While crews have managed to pump oxygen to those who might still be alive inside, large amounts of mud and debris are making access extremely difficult. Food and water also remain a critical issue for anyone stuck underground as emergency personnel work to safely reach them.
The United States government is stepping in to assist, with the State Department activating $3.5 million in humanitarian aid. Officials say this funding will provide food assistance to up to 10,000 flood-affected households and help rebuild roads to reach isolated areas. Meanwhile, residents in the hardest-hit regions are beginning to return to their homes to salvage what they can from the destruction.
