A foot chase in Glendale led to a barricade standoff involving the Glendale Police Department, SWAT, drones, and a 36-year-old suspect accused of using his own parents as human shields. Officers spotted David Melendez near 51st Avenue and Maryland on Wednesday night. According to police, Melendez has an extensive criminal history, including five active and outstanding felony warrants from Maricopa County, and was actively on probation.
Following the initial encounter, Melendez fled and officers chased him to a home on Sierra Vista. Sgt. Justin Ramsay stated the suspect jumped over a front yard fence and began violently banging on the door screaming to be let in. The homeowners, who officers learned to be his parents, let him inside before police surrounded the residence. During the standoff, police say Melendez came out of the home using his parents as human shields before going back inside.
Neighbors who watched Melendez grow up expressed shock over the massive police presence, noting the large number of patrols and the SWAT team. After negotiations failed, the Glendale SWAT team broke open windows for drones to search the property, eventually entering the home and finding Melendez wedged inside a small closet behind a water heater. Melendez faces two obstruction charges, in addition to drug offenses and his outstanding warrants, after being taken into custody.
