A deadly police shooting is under investigation in Mesa this morning after officers responded to a call for help about a man with a gun. Investigators say officers were called to the neighborhood near Mesa Drive and McKellips Road around 8:30 p.m. last night. The caller told police there was a man who was threatening and displaying a gun in his waistband.
When officers arrived at the scene, they tried to get that man to come out, but he would not respond. Police then saw a man over a block wall who had a gun. It isn't clear what exactly happened at that point, but officers opened fire. When police and K-9 officers approached, the man was declared dead. No officers were hurt, and police say this isn't the first time they had to deal with the unidentified man in a situation like this.
Also during the incident, a police vehicle that was in the area responding to the call got into a crash on Mesa Drive. Details about that collision are not clear at this time, but police say the driver of the other car was not involved with the situation that led up to the shooting. Gilbert Police will investigate the officer-involved shooting under the East Valley Critical Incident Team, while Mesa Police are continuing to investigate the initial call.
