I started my diagnosis journey at 23 and finally got answers when I was 26; almost three full years of being in and out of doctors and test after test, appointment after appointment. For many people, this process can take even longer, for similar reasons to mine taking so long; doctors who either did not know about EDS, had prejudices about what EDS should be or look like, or just lacked any patience or understanding at all and wouldnt listen. This experience is not isolated to me or to people with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.
People on year long diagnosis journeys perform unacknowledged physical and emotional labor in order to find answers and seek treatment and appropriate medical care. When someone tells you they are undiagnosed DO NOT think hypochondriac, fight your own prejudices. Diagnosis can take an extremely long time but that does not mean that they are not truly ill.

I also forgot masking was another vocab word. Masking is a complex and costly survival strategy for autistic people. It generally involves intentionally learning neurotypical behaviors and mimicking them in social situations. Sometimes masking focuses on hiding behaviors that people feel wont be accepted.

Not only are a lot of people still unaware about Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) but many who do know about it actually have great misconceptions or misinformation about it; assuming it only looks and acts one way when it actually manifests itself on a wide spectrum, with various symptoms that differ from person to person and can even be fluid. I’d like to use this #EDSAwarenessMonth to uplift the diverse identities and narratives of people with EDS with this tag.

This feels pretty vulnerable to talk about… This is something that is just simply a part of my life, where ableism/internalized ableism have left me with trauma to work through (and I AM working through it) and that I couldve continued to keep private for just those closest to me to know.... (cont.)
What opening up about it now means for me is that I officially claim it, I have taken that step forward out of the shadow of shame & internalized ableism. I will practice not being afraid of asking for the clarifications I need or excusing myself when over-stimulated or fatigued. I will not be embarrassed of my stims or when I need to pause to process something or work on my words…
When I speak, there is so much happening internally to get words to come out. I picture these collections of words and phrases that fly around above my head, and as I speak I am working speedily to try to crochet these words into a proper quilted sentence. Every time I successfully do it, I surprise myself, it feels impossible while its happening.
One time I out-louded this visual because I had to say, “The words are floating so slowly now... I try to pull them towards my mind but the processing is taking forever. I’ll get half a sentence out and then find that there are no words left.. I lost my thought.”
My friends and my therapist have all been very encouraging and they have motivated me to share this part of myself hoping that it could do some good for someone else. I hope this video and anything that I share about my experiences can be used as a tool to help others.

I have a genetic degenerative condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, it affects/weakens the joints, skin, blood vessels, and internal organs; within the past few years, my standing/walking limits have steadily declined. Due to chronic pain, joint hypermobility (or laxity/weakness), the risk of injury, dysautonomia, and cardiovascular issues I can only stand/walk for a few seconds to a few minutes (average of 60 seconds) at a time depending on my symptoms, injury, etc. Currently, in order to walk I need very specific circumstances, I need places to sit consistently available to me, guarantees of only having to walk in short bursts, as well as the security of knowing the layout of a place in order to avoid injury. The rest of the time I am a wheelchair user, it is the safest, least painful, most independent, and most efficient way for me to be mobile. In this video, I speak candidly about the mobility aids I use and when I use them.
