My submission for the Hardware Jams “Living Stereo” Weekend Challenge.
I’ve been wanting to try some oscilloscope music for a while and with my main rig still under construction this weeks challenge seemed like the perfect opportunity to try it. Oscilloscope music works by connecting the left audio channel to the X axis and the right channel to the Y axis of the oscilloscope. It is then possible (with some pretty hardcore maths) to draw shapes and animations on the oscilloscope using the audio signal. You get the music video built in to the music! I had a huge amount of fun jamming with this technique.
I set up a few animations in oscistudio and mapped a load of the controls to my beatstep pro and nano kontrol. Connected the audio out to my vintage HP CRT oscilloscope and set about jamming with the HWJ logo.
This week’s challenge prompt:
Time to experiment with stereo field! This weekend your challenge is to make a jam that makes good use of stereo space. You may do this in whatever way suits your style. Try panning instruments in different positions, or moving them around. Experiment with eq and reverb to enhance the sense of space. Or go wild and try unorthodox solutions. We invite you to try out new things and play around with these experiments.
