While camping in Big Bear, I got a chance to tour Sean’s incredible Gen 1 Rivian R1S Quad Motor overlanding rig. This is one of the most versatile builds I’ve seen because it’s completely modular!
The Removable Slide-Out Kitchen: Sean designed a custom slide-out system for the rear cargo area. It’s secured with just four screws and ratchet straps to prevent tipping when extended, but the best part is that it’s non-permanent. When camping season is over, he can pop the whole unit out in minutes and get his third-row seats back! It features plenty of clearance for his gear, a dedicated power setup, and even an oven for gourmet trail meals.
The Rooftop Tent Hack: If you look closely at his roof, Sean is running three crossbars for maximum stability. However, because of the R1S roofline, the bars aren't naturally perfectly level. To solve this, Sean used adds washers to the rear crossbar mounts to slightly increase the height. This ensures his rooftop tent sits perfectly flat and stable across all three bars without putting stress on the center one.
It’s all about those small, clever adjustments that make a huge difference in the wild. Sean’s setup proves you can have a hardcore adventure rig without sacrificing the daily utility of your SUV!
