In this video, I show you how to setup the Acorn Archimedes emulator core for the Mister FPGA console. The Mister FPGA Acorn Archimede core emulates the Acorn Archimedes 3000 computer which was released in 1989.
It came with 2 MB of RAM, a 3.5" high density floppy disk drive, ARM250 32 bit RISC processor at 12 MHz, VGA graphics card, Econet networking port, RISC OS 3.1 ROM chip, and a port for a 60 MB IDE hdd.
It used a RISC processor which was unlike other processors, which used a CISC architecture. Other competing processors at the time, like the 80286, 80386 DX, 80386 SX, Motorola 68000, WDC 65C816, and others used CISC architecture at the time. RISC processors used less energy compared to CISC processors. The Acorn A3020 consumed only 10 to 15 Watt compared to a 80386 SX based computer which consumed about 50 to 80 Watt.
The processors we use in smartphones and tablet computer are RISC processors. The Acorn A300 or A400 series were the first RISC powered computers, which were released in 1987. The Acorn A3000 was designed to be a computer that was to compete with Amiga, and Atari ST computers. The layout of those computers were the same, they have a keyboard chassis all in one layout.
This computer was only released in the United Kingdom. Acorn was a company that designed educational computers in the UK, this computer was used in British classrooms, and schools. It was also used by hobbyists and home users as well. It never entered the business world, so it never became that popular, like the IBM PCs and compatibles. It was marketed to schools and home users as a low cost computer, like an Amiga 500.
