In this video, I show you some vintage pens I have, like the Cross Century, and Parker Jotter ballpoint pens that I have.
Parker was founded in 1888 by George Standford Parker in Janesville, Wisconsin. It was sold to Gillette in 1993, and sold again to Rubbermaid in 2000. It is still owned by Rubbermaid today. Cross pen company was founded by Richard Cross in 1846 in Providence, Rhode Island. It changed hands a number of times. In 1916, it was acquired by Walter Boss. In 2013, it was acquired by a private equity company called Clarion Capital Partners for $60 million. In 2017, it changed hands again, the new owner being Transom Capital Group. Transom Capital Group returned it to private ownership again. Cross is a privately owned company.
The Parker Jotter came out in January of 1954, and the Cross Century pen in 1946. They had been producing these models for the past 80 years. The ballpoint pen was invented in October 30, 1888 by John J. Loud; however, the modern ballpoint pen was invented by László Bíró in 1938.
These types of ballpoint pens were usually given to people as gifts. A lot of gift shops carried pens like these. People would have pen stands with Cross and Parker pens in their offices as status symbols.
Starting from around 2005, ballpoint pen sales had been steady declining due to more and more people using, computers in more developed countries. In less developed countries, it is another story, sales had been increasing. In a lot of countries around this planet, a lot of people still use pen and paper.
I had not used a pen since 2005, because most of what I did and do is on a computer. I don't write lines of code on a piece of paper, or write anything on a piece of paper. I would use a word processor or a notepad to type things out, and save it on a hard drive. In most developed countries, people don't use filing cabinets, they servers and computers.
The last time I received a pen as a gift was in the early 2000s. People used to give luxury pens, and watches as gifts. Today, we rarely carry and use those things. Instead, we use computers, and smartphones.
