“Miles Morales is not Spider-Man” It’s a phrase I see a lot, especially when a new Miles related product is coming around the corner. The more accurate point is that Miles is not their Spider-Man. Some feel that Miles will always be second to Peter, and that he is not Spider-Man, but Miles Morales, who just so happens to have the same powers as Spider-Man. Since this discussion is currently ongoing and likely to continue through to the release of Spider-Man 2, I wanted to give my thoughts on this topic and add to the discussion, hopefully in a meaningful way. This will be an opinion piece more than anything so don’t be afraid to drop your own two cents below. I’ll also be talking about mild spoilers from Spider-Man 2018, Spider-Man Miles Morales, and Into The Spider-Verse. I also can’t show many clips from the films because there is a solid chance that it will be copyrighted so I’ll do my best to match the on screen visuals to what I’m saying.

So. I want to begin by talking about the fundamental differences between Peter and Miles, as far as modern interpretations go. Aside from the most obvious... height, the two come from different cultural backgrounds with different support systems. Peter comes from an environment where he, despite his intelligence, is always struggling to get by, no doubt because of his other responsibilities, and in many instances, Peter is shown to do this alone. Mary Jane is often the most he gets as far as a support system goes, but Miles has most of his family backing him up as well as most of Harlem, which leads into another fundamental difference, their roles as heroes.
Peter over the last two decades has become something of a heavy hitter in mainstream media. Not just in popularity but in the scope of his tasks. Many of his latest outings see him dealing not with the fate of his friends, family, or even New York, but the world, the universe, and the multiverse. He may not be an Avenger, but his media is always chasing an Avengers level threat. Hell, Peter's latest outing saw him taking down the sinister six, and granted that could be more of a reflection of Insomniac's lofty ambitions, but the point remains that Peter is so focused on the greater world, that we lose touch with his humble roots. This evolution of the character isn’t a bad thing, but it’s a blindspot that functionally, Miles gets to cover. Miles is Harlem's Spider-Man. He fills the gap for a friendly neighborhood hero. But it isn’t as simple as Miles covering small time tasks, it’s about Miles being in touch with the community. He literally rescues cats, and in return the people help him out. Peter has these benefits too, but again, his adversaries often make him lose sight of the little guy. This is of course more in reference to the Insomniac games, but even in other stories, like Miles and Peter in Into The Spider-Verse, the dynamic shows up again.
Who is Spiderman? Who is not Spider-Man? Is Miles Spider-Man? Miles Morales is a new character, exploding in popularity since his recent film and video game introductions in Spiderman Miles Morales for the PS4 the Spider-Man Miles Morales PS5 port, Into the Spiderverse, Across the spider verse, and with that, there has been a rise in the notion that Miles Morales is Not Spider-Man. In my opinion, if Miles Morales is Not Spiderman, then Peter Parker in Spiderman 2, Spiderman 3, The Amazing Spider-Man, and even Gwen Stacy is not Spider-Man either. I intend to give my own thought on if miles morales spiderman. What do you think; Is miles spiderman?
