Blast from the Past. Rita receives a letter from an old flame, and as he's in town she invites him to dinner to see if they can rekindle their romance of yore. Mike, on the other hand, has absolutely no romantic streak in him whatsoever, much to the annoyance of Melanie. This episode was originally broadcast on Tuesday, 5th April, 1994.
This is one of those episodes that perfectly balances the emotion of a sensitive subject with the comedey of trying to fix the ever-compounding issues. The hilarity of childhood sweetheart Jerry not quite turning out to be the hunky drop-dead-gorgeous Adonis we're expecting is brilliant right from his initial doorbell mishap - which may well be a nod to Laurel and Hardy, Inspector Clouseau, or both - right through to the poem misunderstanding. The "Sean Bean"/"More like Mr Bean" lines sum up that side of things succinctly.
On the other hand, there are some really nice heart-warming conversations between Rita and Mel, Rita and Mike, and ultimately Mike and Mel that underpin the relationships between them all. Angelo helping Mike in his poetical endeavours also plays out well, but he comes across as more of a peripheral character than usual in this one. I like how they could shake things up like that and have a completely different focus if they felt like it.
Of the guest stars, Kerry Shale we already know round these parts for his appearances in T-Bag and The Tomorrow People, both from the same writers. Belinda Peters has an IMDB that boasts roles in the likes of Casualty, The Bill, and EastEnders, but her personal website is easy enough to Google and it looks like she remains a very prolific voice artist. Her wedding dress and neck brace combination in this is _sensational._
