Most people know Mark Kozelek and Sun Kil Moon from the 2014 album "Benji". It's really a classic album of introspection - death, living long, lost friends, but ending off with wonderful resolve to remain competitive in a world that will not wait for you to catch up. But Mark has made music under the Sun Kil Moon moniker since 2000, and even before that with his band Red House Painters in the 1990s. Lost Verses is a beautiful collection of live recordings of various SKM and Red House Painters songs, named after the Lost Verses track on the SKM album April released just the year before.
Personally my SKM journey was Benji, Admiral Fell Promises (2010), and then Among The Leaves (2012). These are still in line with Benji's more spoken world style of delivery, so I was floored and enraptured with the singing of Lost Verses. A user on songmeanings.com sums it up nicely:
"Ooh, I get it. It's fog. They're the ghosts of the fog. The fog is personified - 'I came up from under the ocean / Evaporated sea salt water / A mist above the skyline' - And I think he's personifying the fog as all of those ghosts, all those lost verses, the people still haunting the "Many places we / Lay down in sleepy hidden shadows" - Tamalpais, Marin Headlands, San Francisco - and watching over loved ones, peering into windows. These are the 'ghosts of April' that 'Fill the foggy day' and 'hide the hills away' creeping "on the bay flowing into the ocean glowing."
Among the many outstanding songs Mark/SKM have created, Lost Verses stands tall. There are some hiccups for me on an album that's become one of my favorites ever. I just don't agree with the vocals on the album version of Tonight The Sky, or that weird guitar solo seemingly going nowhere. The strings on Moorestown sound so...cheesy for lack of a better word. I kept revisiting Sonora Pine tracks to crystalize how I felt about them, and I think they could have used more melody than backing. But Harper Road, Tonight In Bilbao (BOTH versions for me), Blue Orchids, oh lord Blue Orchids! Hit after hit on this album, the alternate versions too, but Blue Orchids almost steals it all away. The most beautiful guitar slide I've ever heard in those first few seconds. Tonight In Bilbao, fuck, there's so much! What sticks with me the most is the line "And all the kindness she had shown/Was only a dream".
Getting back to the live recordings, I really enjoy how much darker Unlit Hallway feels compared to the April version. The way Mark borders on bellowing (WAAAKE MY LOOOVE) is so raw, so heartfelt. The live version does lack the banjo, which I thought was a genius touch and makes revisiting that song so enjoyable. Moorestown gets the more weighty version it deserves by subtracting the strings, it's all fantastic stuff and I wish I could write more but youtube has this darn character limit. Katy Song, holy shit Katy Song. What a completely forlorn version. The most compared to its sisters of RHP and SKM. I was very shocked this had only gotten to youtube five months ago, and with so few views. Here's hoping it gets more.
