For the longest time I rated this pretty low on the AMT ladder. I primarily uploaded this because it has the absolute best rendition of La Novia, at least next to the one on their Live in Japan album. And that was quite a while ago now, but I held off making it public because I was already uploading many AMT albums at the time. I was listening to some 70s psych and was reminded of this album. Been spending more time with it, and my opinion has really changed.
Not of La Novia though. I always loved this album's La Novia. Rosina De Peira, a French singer of traditional Occitan folk songs, just elevates this to heavenly. I do believe the chant of La Novia is in Occitan, at that. And the way the other band members join in with her, it's just wonderful. I never not chant it with them when I listen to this. This version of Pink Lady Lemonade/OM Riff mix is a hard mother fucker. I especially like the off-key jump-back-in late in the song. Maybe I'm jumping the gun, but this just might tie as the best version of PLL next to the one off Love Electronique. The way the halfway mark has Higashi taking us to space right into the nebula of the OM Riff, shifting BACK to PLL very briefly, and then that explosion. Very fucking nice.
I think what always turned me off is the slow going La Le Lo. But just relaxing, feeling AMT, listening to the crowd feel AMT, it's grown on me a lot. I don't know how I used to abhor the chanting on La Le Lo. I really enjoy it now. I think for a while I kept viewing AMT as up and down music. They'd have the quiet, the explosion, the come down, repeat. And when viewed like that, La Le Lo's come down was a hard hurdle for me. Just went on too long. So instead of listening with those expectations, I just relaxed and let the music take me. I often forget to do that with music. The rendition of Cometary Orbital Drive I used to think "oh they're doing that again I guess," as COD has become a staple of AMT live shows. But, again, letting it take me, and those chants that bookend it!, it's as good as any other rendition of it. Hell, even better with those chants that bring the audience into the moment. Helluva sendoff as always, AMT.
Rosina De Peira left us last year on June 16, 2019. She was 86, a long and hopefully fulfilling life. I actually have a lot of her music in storage and totally forgot about it. Time to dig it out.
