Early April gave us version 1.6.0 of Mario Kart World, the first major content update in months, and completely unannounced. In addition to some bug fixes, nerfing the Boomerang Flower so it runs out faster and has a shorter range, and adjusting mercy invincibility to be variable based on your vehicle’s weight, the Bob-omb Blast mode has been added to Battle. While it’s the mode with the least amount of people caring about it, and I still like it regardless, Bob-omb Blast seems to be a largely welcome addition to the game.

This game’s take on Bob-omb Blast is the most similar to the one from Mario Kart 8 and 8 Deluxe: all Item Boxes will supply you with a Bob-omb, and you can store up to 10. Once 60 seconds remain, single Item Boxes, providing you 1 Bob-omb, are replaced with double Item Boxes, providing you 2. The goal is to attack each other with Bob-ombs, and you lose a balloon each time you’re hit with one and gain 1 point each time you hit someone else with one. The longer you hold down the item button, the further you throw the Bob-omb. They can also be dropped behind you.

One difference between this Bob-omb Blast and previous games’, however, is that you begin with 6 balloons instead of 5, and if you lose all of your balloons, you are eliminated.

Because this is a new mode, I’ll begin this video with some Bob-omb Blast matches. And in case you’re just tuning in, all matches were played using motion controls.

00:00 - Battle #1
Bob-omb Blast
Salty Salty Speedway
Character: Nabbit
This was my very first Bob-omb Blast battle. It seems that it gets mingled in with the other two modes, I think joined in too late after the update, but we had 6 other matches, mostly Coin Runners, before we got this one.

03:43 - Battle #2
Bob-omb Blast
Big Donut
Character: Dry Bones
I overextended myself this time—I thought I was safe as time was running out and went for one last push, but I got caught in an explosion and lost my last balloon. Shows how precarious this mode can be, even with an extra balloon over Balloon Battle!

07:27 - Rally #1
Golden Rally: Desert Hills, Mario Bros. Circuit, Choco Mountain, Moo Moo Meadows, Mario Circuit, Acorn Heights
Character: Rosalina
There was this Baby Mario player who managed to trail behind every checkpoint, yet avoid elimination, and wind up in 4th overall. That must have been a very interesting Knockout Tour from their perspective. Either that, or they did it on purpose to try to get the best available items.

16:36 - Rally #2
Acorn Rally: Toad’s Factory, Wario Stadium, Choco Mountain, Peach Stadium, Cheep Cheep Falls, DK Pass
Character: Donkey Kong
You may notice with the time stamps here that this rally was shorter than usual—it ended in a disconnect. And this was going to end in a home course for Donkey Kong too!

21:17 - Race #1
150cc
Faraway Oasis to Dino Dino Jungle
Character: Baby Daisy
Music: ?
I can never remember the name of some of these songs. I was also planning on using the Golden Mushroom until the Boo took it near the end, so I had to settle for the Triple Mushrooms to cut the corner in the laboratory area itself…but I was satisfied with the results.

24:11 - Race #2
150cc
Toad’s Factory to Dry Bones Burnout
Character: Hammer Bro
Music: Cheese Land
A lot of things can go wrong in Dry Bones Burnout when I play, and indeed, I was too accustomed to the Knockout Tours that I went the wrong way when entering Dry Bones Burnout itself. I was able to gain 6 positions using a Mushroom and defend myself with the subsequent Golden Shell to avoid losing those positions back.

26:51 - Race #2
150cc
Cheep Cheep Falls
Character: Wiggler
And here’s a standard 3-lap race so that this video can have at least on of both kinds of races too. I was busy looking at the map to see what was happening towards the end of the first lap, which is why I briefly went offroad there.

30:05 - Battle #1
Coin Runners
Peach Stadium
Character: Peach
I wonder if Coin Runners turns up more often, because wile I got hit at the beginning, it was mostly pretty peaceful. Coin Runners always provides you with something to do at all times, and the combat is always indirect. Or maybe I just avoided the carnage, looking at the results.

33:51 - Battle #2
Balloon Battle
Mario Bros. Circuit
Character: Peach (again)
I forgot to change characters here, which is why there are two Peach matches in a row. There were a few people in this room who would pick Mario Bros. Circuit whenever it turned up, meaning we played on Mario Bros. Circuit a lot. Of the 11 participants here, only 4 remained at the end. Our champion of the room, GER☆Sanji, got 15 points, enough to eliminate three competitors by themselves.

37:37 - Battle #3
Balloon Battle
DK Pass
Character: Yoshi (Soft Server)
I still managed to score a point using the nerfed Boomerang Flower and nabbed a balloon off of the room champion. (Not that I placed ahead of them though. The top three scored a combined 31 points!)
