On February 13, 2024, at around 8:50 p.m., Deputy Bondank observed a vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign at Southeast 125th Terrace Road and Northeast 1st Street Road. He attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the driver, Carlos Gomez Vaquez, refused to stop. He fled for a short distance at a slow rate of speed and eventually came to a stop at a home on Southeast 128th Avenue. Gomez Vaquez refused to comply with deputies’ commands to exit the vehicle. He continued to drive into the backyard of the residence and ultimately fled from Deputy Bondank on foot.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Aviation Unit and K-9 Unit responded to assist with locating Gomez Vaquez. From Air-1, deputies located a heat signature that was determined to be Gomez Vaquez hiding in an area of thick woods, and they directed K-9 Corporal Jarrick Donely, K-9 Carrier, and Deputy Bondank to the suspect’s location. After nearly an hour and a half track through the thickly wooded area, K-9 Carrier located and apprehended Gomez Vaquez. He was taken into custody and it was later learned that he was in possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia, and he did not have a valid driver’s license.

Gomez Vaquez was arrested for Fleeing to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer, Possession of Cocaine, Resisting without Violence, Driving without a Valid License, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was cleared by medics and transported to the Marion County Jail.
