Fashionably late to the party, but I only just started playing it. So here it is: the Main Theme from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, fully orchestrated with engraved sheet music & part scores, ready to perform!
A huge thank you to Jane Wei (Erhu) & Dmoll (Soprano Saxophone) for performing in this. Check out their other work!

➤ Analysis:
The original track has a substantial amount of post-processing effects, notably with the warped voices. Translating that into a singable choir part therefore presents an interesting challenge: do you ask the performers to be mic'd up and process their vocals live? Or construct a choir part that can be sung as written, with no extra processing?
It was this latter option that I chose, largely for the greater accessibility it would allow for more ensembles to perform this arrangement. As such, the track begins with these "Zonai Voices" singing the Zonai motif that occurs regularly throughout the game. This is accompanied by various human noises (clapping and "shhh"), but is also doubled in some woodwinds to assist in following the rather tricky motif.
Tonally, we have no centre until 0:13, with the introduction of more instruments revolving around the note "C". Interestingly, by 0:24 we pivot into D (the secondary dominant of C), closing the phrase off with a massive 5-octave suspended 4-3 7th chord (A-D-E-G; 0:34).
From here (0:40), we would expect some sort of perfect cadence (A to D), or perhaps an interrupted cadence (A to B♭ or G). We get neither, and instead receive a tertiary modulation from A to D♭ (enharmonically C♯), which is far more exciting.
At this moment, we get a grand statement of the "Tears of the Kingdom" theme, which is constructed from snippets of the earlier "Breath of the Wild" main theme, now in F minor (the relative of D♭).
As the section closes (0:52), we remain in F minor and get an erhu solo (performed here by Jane Wei) accompanied by piccolo. This material is then taken over by the strings (1:05) for a short 4-bar phrase, tailing the section off 4-bars early (interrupted phrasing).
This is followed by a saxophone solo (1:13), performed here by @Dmoll , as we pivot into D♭ / C minor. There is an interesting snippet of "false relation" at 1:26 (where the same note is played at the same time but with differing accidentals), seen here between A & A♭, creating a very interesting soft dissonance.
The next section (1:28) jumps up another tertiary modulation (E♭ to G♭) and briefly prepares us for another orchestral return, now in triplets (1:32). As the track diminishes (1:35), we get a snippet of the "Breath of the Wild" motif, ever expanding in pitch and instrumentation into one final crescendo (1:42).
Ending in A, do we proceed with either a perfect or interrupted cadence? This time, yes we do, progressing to B♭ (1:46) with a grand statement of the TotK motif. From here onward is largely identical to my "2021 Trailer Theme" arrangement (youtu.be/TgZcjLlq26U?si=497O2UGB6IKbu4E_), now with additional choir, woodwinds and harp to make full use of the new instrumentation.
The Zonai voices return at 2:12, leading to a very dissonant triplet ostinato with tritone intervals, before a final erhu phrase playing the renowned "Zelda's Lullaby" motif.

With the recent release of Zelda: Links Awakening HD, I wanted to tackle a few of the brilliantly orchestrated tracks, starting with the Overworld Theme (with its initial woodwind introduction).
➤ Analysis:
The Overworld Theme to Links Awakening has a few versions; this particular one that opens with woodwind fanfare is only played once after you first retrieve the sword from the beach. After that, this woodwind introduction is replaced by a string introduction (which I have included in the .PDF scores below).
To begin the analysis, this woodwind introduction begins glamorously with tertiary modulations from G major to Bb major to Db major (0:03), creating a remarkably triumphant sound. To get back to the tonic of G major from Db, a simple semitonal shift upward is used, getting us from Db major to D major. From there, a simple perfect cadence brings us back into G major.
The main string section opens with the familiar Zelda motif, which continues more or less identically to many of its previous renditions from other games. The first big change occurs at 0:33 where the original Zelda material suddenly melts into a chromatically descending legato passage which concludes in the tonic minor (G minor).
Following on is a brief section in Eb major (0:38) where the cello takes a solo role. But the 1st violin quickly returns to reclaim its solo role (0:44), repeating back to the previous harmonic founding of Eb major.
However, here the harmony modulates to Ab major rather than D minor (0:47). This rather sudden and extreme shift seems quite distant from the tonic of G major. So how do they resolve it? By using a cheeky Neapolitan 6th progression (Ab major to D major to G minor/major) which solves this harmonic problem seamlessly and with a lot more interest than a simple perfect cadence.
Sticking true to Nagamatsus philosophy of not having reverb in order to get the best sound quality out of the 3DS/Switch speakers, I have applied very little reverb here.
The score was created in Sibelius 7.5, and the audio was created in Cubase using sample libraries from Vienna Symphonic.

A transcription Ive made of this theme from Fire Emblem: Awakening and an audio I also created to test it out.
➤ Analysis:
You can notice some similarities of this Id theme to Id (Purpose) through the presence of the snare drum and slow padding chords in each bar (the harmonic contour of which is similar to bars 5-8 from Id (Purpose), but not exact).
This Id seems to be built out of two parallel fifth chords that are combined to create this harmonic ambiguity and floating sensation. The improvisatory nature of the cello solo furthers this atmosphere.
You can also see the primary Awakening motif (0:30) which is scattered throughout the entire soundtrack of Fire Emblem: Awakening.
The score was created in Sibelius 7.5, and the audio was created in Cubase using the brilliant EastWest sample libraries.

Another orchestral arrangement Ive made of this static, yet eerily beautiful theme from Golden Sun: The Lost Age.
➤ Analysis:
Since the original audio was so stationary, with very little development or movement at all, I remained faithful to that and scarcely changed the instrumentation or harmonies. The sense of agelessness is hopefully as apparent as it was in the original. And if not, well, the metronomes might help!
Sakuraba uses the phrygian mode on F (F, G-flat, A-flat, B-flat, C, D-flat, E-flat) - a very dreary mode that aids in suggesting that timelessness/agelessness. There is a metric modulation in the latter phrase of this theme, when the percussive instrument enters in complete metric dissonance to the rest of the instruments, again suggesting the theme of time and perhaps embodying the prolonged lives the Lemurians have.
The score was created in Sibelius 7.5, and the audio was created in Cubase using the brilliant EastWest sample libraries.

Time to sit back, relax, and roll some dice with this jazz arrangement of the Lucky Dice / Lucky Medal mini-game music, also doubling as the lobby music for the battle mode.
➤ Analysis:
The go-to jazz track in Golden Sun, this accompanies the various mini-games throughout the game, such as Lucky Dice / Lucky Medal Fountains as well as the background music for the link battle lobby. So what does Sakuraba use to create a jazzy atmosphere?
Instrumentation-wise, the original gives us a drum kit & walking bass maintaining the rhythmic and harmonic anchors respectively. A brassy stab punctuates the chord in a syncopated (off-beat) way on occasion. And all are underpinning an improvisatory soloist on top (panpipes).
As such, when orchestrating I decided to use a small jazz ensemble to complement this: a saxophone soloist (replacing the panpipes for more accessibility), a muted brass group, drums and other small percussion, a new piano soloist, and an upright bass (replacing the bass guitar for a more club-like feel). This new instrumentation therefore shifts closer to classic jazz orchestration as if you were having drinks at a bar with a live band on stage.
Harmonically, we remain very simple: oscillating between E major and D major. This allows for the soloist to easily improvise their own material by following these familiar chords. To decorate this, Sakuraba uses added-note chords (chords with notes that go beyond the triad), such as 9ths (D-F♯-A-E; found in the panpipes/saxophone at 0:17) and 6ths (E-G♯-B-C♯; found also in the panpipes/saxophone at 0:06). These added-note chords are particularly characteristic of jazz through the blurring of the tonality.
Further evidence of jazz can be found directly with the cymbals of the drum kit, which are playing the familiar jazz swing rhythm / ride cymbal pattern (dotted: DUN, dun-dun DUN, dun-dun DUN) which is predominant in jazz repertoire, as (of course) are all of the solos: saxophone at 0:04 - 0:28, trumpet at 0:28 - 0:41, and piano at 0:41 - 0:53.
My main addition to this track is the piano, which adds a quasi-improvised accompaniment throughout in addition to its own solo at 0:41, and also a little ending to conclude the track properly (1:43), where I also construct various added-note chords and some false relations (playing the same note with 2 or more accidentals at the same time; here, C and C♯) before concluding on a massive E9 add6 chord (E-G♯-B-C♯-F♯).
(P.S. I dont wanna transcribe jazz solos anymore lmao)
The score was created in Sibelius 7.5, and the audio was created in Cubase using sample libraries from EastWest, Vienna Symphonic & Addictive Drummer.
